Shaping the Future MAS Workforce
The provision of relevant skills and expertise across the workforce underpin the UK’s position at the forefront of both the technical development and operation of MAS. Sustaining this pipeline of talent and competencies is therefore crucial for tomorrow’s new high-quality jobs.
Close liaison between Higher Education and Further Education providers and industry is therefore a priority and MASG enables this through:
- Technical Skills Development / Curriculum Development – working with college and university partners and employers, to ensure a close alignment between national provision and employer demand.
- Higher Education and Innovation – maximising the supply of relevant skilled and innovative people to drive innovation in the sector, and to identify areas of future high demand for skills at graduate and postgraduate levels required to support growth in the industry.
- Flexible Course Provision – providing both graduate and master level programmes via Degree and Post Graduate Apprenticeship routes where possible so that existing employees can enhance their skills relating to Marine Autonomous operations. SMI is currently developing a MAS apprenticeship as currently there is no provision for this.
- Coordination across the UK –MASG has close links with the following working groups to push the skills agenda forward:
- MEWG skills work
- MUK People and Skills Forum
- Maritime Skills Alliance
- Maritime Skills Commission
- MUK MASRWG Skills workstream
- MUK Maritime Careers
- MUK Women in Maritime
- Inspiring the next generation - The MASG has launched our Marine Autonomy Challenge (MAChallenge) to inspire the next generation of young technologists. Find out more about MAChallenge here.
