Membership Benefits
The Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) promotes the interests of UK-based companies in the international market place and to governments. Our membership is inclusive of the whole supply chain from shipyards and major system providers to the manufacturers of the smallest components, as well as companies involved in marine science & technology and the growing area of autonomy.
In joining SMI companies can select which of our specialist sectors reflect their business interests and there is no restriction on how many are chosen.

New Momentum and Influence
- Representation of member issues with government through regular briefings with ministers and officials, in various government departments including DBT, National Shipbuilding Office (NSO), Cabinet Office, DEFRA, DfT, MoD and Treasury.
- Representation on the NSO Shipbuilding Enterprise for Growth (SEG) that contributes to the implementation of the National Shipbuilding Strategy.
- The ability to influence the drafting of UK government’s white papers and other consultative documents through our representation on the various fora (for example the Defence Industries Council and the SME Forum of the Defence Suppliers’ Forum convened by the Secretary of State for Defence).
- Engagement in the UK technology agenda, with UK Research & Innovation, through the Maritime UK Technology & Innovation Group and Maritime Autonomous Systems Steering Group.
- Eligibility for election to the consultative councils of SMI’s six market sectors.
One of the best ways to understand the value of SMI membership is to hear directly from some of our members.
Subscriptions are based on a company’s turnover in our specialist sectors. The subscription year runs from 1 October and normally on a pro-rata amount from the time of membership application to 30 September.

This exciting challenge is open to teams of students studying at UK universities. The first phase involves a video submission and the finals take place in November this year. Each qualifying team will be provided with an industry simulator to enable them to build the autonomous behaviours required to achieve a series of challenges.
