Membership Types
The Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) currently offers six different categories of membership. Please find these below.
Full Membership
Full membership is available to any corporation or body of persons bona fide engaged in the Industry (see below) in the United Kingdom subject to meeting all the qualifying criteria and the provisions of the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) Articles of Association.
Qualifying criteria:
(a) companies must be registered at companies house with an office in the UK
(b) companies must design/manufacture equipment or provide a service to the Industry in the UK
(c) company turnover must be in excess of £100,000 per annum
The “Industry” means the industry comprising United Kingdom based manufacturers and suppliers of equipment, materials and services used in connection with commercial and naval ships, boats and other craft including submarines and submersibles, ports & terminals, research & development in marine science & technology, offshore oil & gas and renewable energy production, digital technology, maritime autonomous systems and maritime security & safety systems and arrangements.
Full members are eligible for all the benefits of membership as defined from time to time in the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) literature and can nominate candidates to the Board.
Group Membership
Group Membership is available for those companies with 3 or more separate & wholly owned subsidiary companies.
Education & Research
This category is for training organizations, universities and research organizations. Education & Research members do not have voting rights at the General Meetings of SMI and cannot nominate candidates to the Board.
Owners & Operators
This category is open to ship and port owners and operators. The objective is to enhance discussions between the supply chain and the technical staff managing vessels and ports and ensure SMI Councils and events fully encompass the wider industry issues and opportunities. Owner & Operator members do not have voting rights at the General Meetings of SMI and cannot nominate candidates to the Board.
Professional Services
This category is for the legal, financial, insurance, marketing and PR industries that work in the sector. Professional Services members do not have voting rights at the General Meetings of SMI and cannot nominate candidates to the Board.
Acorn
Acorn member companies are those which are new to the business sectors of the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) or are a start-up venture. The first year’s subscription is not subject to the pro-rata rule and will be valid for 12 months from the date of joining. A company’s second year of membership would revert to the appropriate rate for a company’s marine turnover
The subscription year runs from 1 October to 30 September and subscriptions are payable on or from 1 October each year
