Wescom Group launches sMRT ALERT at METSTRADE
The recently introduced DSC AIS Man Overboard device has undergone significant enhancements to streamline localised recovery. Boasting simplified fitting, faster activation, and wearer acknowledgments, the sMRT ALERT marks a substantial leap in the digitisation of Man Overboard (MOB) beacons.
Representing a milestone in MOB beacon technology, the sMRT ALERT introduces two-way signalling, real-time location tracking through AIS (Automatic Identification System), and leverages DSC (Digital Selective Calling) to notify nearby vessels of a distress call. Recognised for its user-focused safety innovations, this groundbreaking device was acknowledged at the METSTRADE exhibition, earning a special mention in the coveted DAME Awards category.
The water activation feature of the sMRT ALERT allows it to be easily attached to any lifejacket through its robust clip mechanism, eliminating the need for specialist fitting. Its portability and the assurance that the device will trigger a call for help even if the user is incapacitated make it a convenient MOB solution for a diverse range of users.
Equipped with cutting-edge technology for wearable personal safety devices, the sMRT ALERT offers an unprecedented level of reassurance to users. The inclusion of a beacon management app facilitates seamless connectivity with smartphones, simplifying device use and providing a convenient means to monitor activation status and the power reserves of the five-year battery.
Activation of the sMRT ALERT can be manual or, in armed mode, triggered automatically after total water immersion for more than two seconds. Upon activation, the device emits an audible alarm and a powerful strobe to confirm activation, enhancing detection in low-light conditions. Notably, the internal DSC receiver allows confirmation when the distress signal has been acknowledged.
Ross Wilkinson, CEO of Wescom Group, expressed satisfaction with the recognition received, stating, "It's fantastic to see our first product in this category acknowledged for its safety innovations with a special mention. We look forward to showcasing the sMRT ALERT at this year's METS TRADE."
The sMRT ALERT, priced from £270 RRP, is manufactured in the UK by Wescom Group, drawing on the sMRT brand's 45 years of expertise in electronic distress signal development. It will be available globally through Wescom's extensive network of international distributors. Importantly, the sMRT ALERT is among the first products designed to meet the new Class M regulation ECC Decision (22)02), now receiving a special mention, which will restrict AIS only MOB devices' use of core AIS channels in certain countries from December 2024. Only class M devices, such as the ALERT—with GNSS and an internal DSC receiver—will be permitted to continue using AIS channels 1 & 2.
