UK Parliament Hosts Roundtable on Future of Ocean Technology

Earlier this month, Emma Johnson attended a thought-provoking roundtable for the launch of the APPG Inquiry into the Future of Ocean Technology. The event, held in Parliament, was a collaborative platform bringing together parliamentarians and stakeholders to delve into the report's key findings.
Chaired by Sally-Ann Hart MP, the roundtable was an opportunity to discuss the innovative approaches outlined in the report, focusing on sustainable ocean technology and the collaborative efforts required from government and industry. The discussion highlighted the potential for the UK to lead globally in the ocean technology sector, given its status as an island nation with notable research centres and capabilities.
The inquiry, emphasising the vital role of ocean technology in shaping our future, outlined 10 key recommendations to the government. It calls for the establishment of a clear and comprehensive strategy to foster research, development, and innovation in this crucial field. As we witness rapid advancements in big data, autonomy, renewables, carbon capture and storage, and blue carbon, the inquiry also identifies barriers hindering the full realisation of ocean technology's potential.
The report underscores the importance of fostering innovation and developing safe and efficient ocean technologies to enhance our scientific understanding of the ocean and combat climate change.
SMI is proud to have provided oral and written evidence in this report on behalf of our members.
