Sir Neville Trotter

The Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) is saddened to learn of the death of Sir Neville Trotter at the age of 94. A former MP for Tynemouth, businessman and public servant, Sir Neville was also a longstanding friend and supporter of SMI and its predecessor organisations.
Sir Neville served as MP for Tynemouth from 1974 to 1997, including membership of the House of Commons Transport and Defence Select Committees. He was knighted in 1997 and later served as Deputy Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Tyne & Wear.
For more than four decades, Sir Neville championed the UK's maritime sector. As SMI's first Honorary Vice President, he provided invaluable support, advice and advocacy, helping to strengthen the Society's standing with government and supporting generations of maritime businesses, particularly within the defence supply chain.
A true gentleman, respected across political and industry circles alike, Sir Neville will be remembered for his integrity, wisdom and unwavering commitment to public service and the maritime community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
