Royal Navy’s Maritime Enterprise Planning Groups
The complex problem set faced by the Royal Navy in the modern operating environment calls for a closer alignment with industry. This is required in order to both understand mutual requirements and to pursue transformative capability that will deliver operational advantage in a more agile way.
The inauguration of Maritime Enterprise Planning Groups, aligned to the Royal Navy Capability Planning Groups, will provide a means to have open and honest dialogue with industry. Set within commercial guidelines, they will bring together military and defence industry capability experts on a periodic basis to assist in resolving problem-led procurement questions.
The Royal Navy will be hosting the first Maritime Enterprise Planning Group meetings on 7 and 10 December.
- 07/12/2020: The Above Water Warfare Capability Planning Group will host a virtual meeting/seminar to discuss the use of Autonomy in the Above Water battlespace.
- 10/12/2020: The Under-Water Warfare Capability Planning Group will host a virtual meeting/seminar to discuss the use of Autonomy in the Under-Water battlespace.
The intent for the Maritime Enterprise Planning Groups is to:
- Improve understanding. The problem led approach to future capability development will drive a closer relationship with industry.
- Enhance situational awareness. Providing industry with a common ‘customer view’ from which they can respond and develop solutions for RN capability requirements.
- Enable alternative thinking. Creating a thought-space where Royal Navy and industry can focus on the requirements for a solution to a problem.
- Deliver agility. Leverage innovation and acceleration pathways to focus on solutions that provide accelerated development.
Outline Plan
Each Maritime Enterprise Planning Group meeting will be held between 1300 to 1600.
The outline schedule is:
- Introduction and strategic context
- Explanation of the autonomy challenge
- Open discussion
- Identification of next steps
Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, the event will be virtual and hosted on Microsoft Teams. Therefore, discussion will be limited to OFFICIAL. The intent for subsequent events is to host them face to face to enable discussion at a higher classification.
