In Rememberance of John Southerden

SMI is deeply saddened to announce the passing of John Southerden, a former colleague who played a key role in supporting UK maritime businesses around the world.
John, who worked for SMI from 2001 until his retirement in 2017, passed away on Monday, 2nd December, at Chester Hospital following an illness with bowel cancer. During his 16 years with SMI, John was highly regarded for his dedication to the maritime sector, travelling extensively to promote and support UK businesses globally. His commitment and expertise left a lasting impact on colleagues and clients alike.
Kevin Robertson, Chair of the CMG Council said:
“John and I first got to know each other when he first joined the BMEA, latterly the CMG Council within the SMI. We were a pretty “staid” bunch, in the old days, but John soon changed that, with his enthusiasm and zest for life, which carried us all along with him. Whether it be long Trade Missions, to China, Korea and a host of other countries, Conferences & Exhibitions across the world, or simply our regular Council Meetings, in London, John was always full of life, humour and had the twinkle in his eye that revealed his mischievous sense of humour. I had the honour of serving as a Council member, Chair (twice) and Vice Chair – which John jokingly referred to a Chair of Vice. John’s market understanding, knowledge and network was an invaluable contribution, to our industry, and he was greatly loved and respected by his peers. I will miss him enormously, but with fond memories.”
The funeral service will be held at Chester Crematorium at 09:20 on Thursday, 19th December 2024.
The family has requested that donations in John’s memory be made via the following link: https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/in-loving-memory-of-john-southerden
