A&P Falmouth Secures UK Government Funding for Groundbreaking Shore Power Project

A&P Falmouth has announced its successful bid for funding from the UK Government's Zero Emission Vessel Infrastructure Fund (ZEVI). The £12 million shore power project aims to revolutionise emissions reduction in port, offering sustainable shore power solutions to vessels.
As part of the APCL Group, a global shipbuilding and ship repair organisation, A&P Falmouth operates in one of the world's largest natural deep-water harbours, providing essential ship repair and in-service support to the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary.
The initiative, named the Falmouth, Atlantic & Peninsula Clean Shore Power Future project, is set to deliver the UK's first multi-vessel flexible shore power connections on Cornwall's Atlantic Peninsula. Partnering with engineering design specialist Marine Zero, the project not only tackles CO2 emissions but also addresses noise pollution in port areas.
This milestone project falls under the Zero Emissions Vessels and Infrastructure competition (ZEVI), funded by the UK Government and delivered in collaboration with Innovate UK. A&P Falmouth's allocation of over £80 million as part of ZEVI emphasises the government's commitment to real-world demonstration R&D projects in clean maritime solutions across the UK.
A&P Falmouth, in collaboration with Marine Zero, is already underway with the design and specification of multiple 1.5MVA shore power systems. The scalable project is expected to be completed by Q1 2025 to meet future capacity demands and additional connections.
Mike Spicer, Managing Director of A&P Falmouth said: "Sustainable shore power plays a vital role in global and national efforts to reduce the impact of the maritime industry on the environment. Our strategy at A&P Falmouth is to achieve net zero across our operations by 2030, so this hugely exciting project will be a significant milestone on that journey. It is testament to the strength of our bid and our reputation in the industry that we were chosen by UK Government to be one of the recipients of this funding."
Transport Secretary Mark Harper, in announcing the winning bids, emphasised the importance of these initiatives in driving economic growth and creating job opportunities across the UK's maritime sector. A&P Falmouth's success underscores its pivotal role in advancing clean maritime technologies and contributing to the nation's decarbonisation efforts.
The ZEVI initiative, part of the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE), signifies a major government investment in the UK's commercial maritime sector. With a focus on rapidly scaling clean maritime technologies, UK SHORE aims to lead an industry transition towards Net Zero, aligning with the broader vision of sustainable and environmentally conscious maritime practices.
