Hypermotive X-M1 Wins Hydrogen Breakthrough Technology of the Year

Hypermotive Ltd has received the Hydrogen Breakthrough Technology of the Year award at the Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology Awards for its X‑M1 fuel‑cell marine power system. Voted for by a judging panel of more than 25 leading journalists, consultants and technology experts, this award provides independent recognition of the potential X-M1 offers to the maritime sector.
First launched at SMM in September 2024, X-M1 combines Hypermotive’s expertise and experience in the application of fuel cell technology into highly regulated and demanding sectors with Honda’s Next Generation fuel cell technology delivering impressive power density, durability and competitive cost. X-M1 has been developed with input from across the maritime sector including naval architects, shipyards and end users to create a system that defines a new level for ease and efficiency across the vessel lifecycle.
Ongoing challenges for the maritime sector in transitioning from existing fossil-based fuels, coupled with incoming IMO and regional net-zero requirements for shipping, mean that it is essential that new sustainable technologies are accessible to the sector.
Innovation across all facets of product development is necessary to ensure systems that align with the requirements of the marine industry. Reliability and safety are paramount and mandatory. Beyond these, systems that are simple to integrate, easy to operate and upgrade, flexible and have longevity supported by established OEMs are all critical for acceptance across various sector stakeholders. These are all areas X-M1 has been designed to address, smoothing the waters for transition to sustainable propulsion systems.
Jeremy Bowman, Chief Technology Officer at Hypermotive said:
"Over the last 24 months of development on X-M1, we have learnt a great deal about the real, everyday requirements of the maritime sector.
“We have worked intensely with key stakeholders, listened to their challenges in adopting fuel cell systems and addressed these in all aspects of X-M1 design. We understand their pressures and challenges and we have focused on minimising the barriers that exist in the net-zero journey. Minimising the cost of ownership, across design and integration, build, operation and upgrade are all key facets of our philosophy with X-M1.
"Embedding our expertise to reduce the load on our customers, the cost and time on upskilling, and simplifying the whole process of adopting hydrogen propulsion technologies underpins everything we do. The power of Honda working with us on this journey provides that reassurance to our customers that we’re here for the duration and the technology is built to last.”
X-M1 is designed for use in a wide range of vessels, with 250kW available for cruise power (300kW peak), it can be scaled up to multi-MW installations. A highly modular and cost-focused design, it is applicable across a range of duties, from inland waterways and coastal vessels to sea-going ferries and cruise ships. Designed for seamless integration with existing ship systems, the embedded experience and expertise from the SYSTEM-H hydrogen integration technologies within X-M1 provides the assurance that the burden of complexity does not fall on the customer. Advanced real-time monitoring and optimisation operating on a secure platform reduces risk whilst optimising system efficiency and lifetime, without compromising power delivery. Complementary integration technologies support control and management of the entire hydrogen system including gas storage and connectivity to vessel and cloud.
The growing relationship between Honda and Hypermotive in the development of X-M1 is testament to the belief within Honda of a strong future for fuel cell and hydrogen power in maritime. Leveraging the great strides achieved in performance from Honda’s Next Generation fuel cell system is a key enabler for X-M1 to offer unprecedented value to the market.
Ingo NyHues, Deputy General Manager Europe Business Planning & Development at Honda Motor Europe said:
"The Next Generation fuel cell provides double the durability and triple the power density of the current system, at half the cost.
"This new generation of fuel cell combines over 30 years of development from Honda R&D re-focused for application in industrial systems. It is the perfect unit for the maritime sector to take a significant step towards a carbon neutral future. The experience of Hypermotive in integrating these technologies is the missing link between ourselves and a variety of industrial applications."
Letters of Intent from first commercial customers have been received for X-M1, with first on-vessel trials planned for 2026 prior to customer deliveries. Businesses interested in hydrogen fuel cell technology and X-M1 can connect with Hypermotive through its website, Here
