Harland & Wolff welcomes Education Minister as it launches work experience and internship schemes

Yesterday, Harland & Wolff welcomed Northern Ireland Education Minister Paul Givan MLA to its iconic shipyard to mark the launch of the company’s 2024 Belfast schools work experience and internship programme. The Minister for Education met with apprentices and learned about Harland & Wolff’s ongoing community engagement strategy.
The Minister toured the yard, observing work across Harland & Wolff’s five core markets including manufacturing of barges for the River Thames, refurbishment of a cruise liner and mid-life upgrade of an FPSO (Floating production storage and offloading). He also saw the extensive civil works underway to upgrade and expand facilities across the Belfast site in preparation for the company’s Fleet Solid Support (FSS) sub-contract.
Harland & Wolff’s 2024 one-week summer work experience scheme is open to applications from Year 12 and 13 students from Belfast. The scheme will give candidates the opportunity to be mentored by the company’s skilled and experienced workforce.
The 2024 six-week paid summer internship is aimed at engineering talent emerging from universities throughout the UK. Interns will work on real world projects and tasks and be able to fully immerse themselves into the culture of Harland & Wolff, working alongside colleagues at all levels and from all parts of our community.
Following his visit, Northern Ireland Education Minister Paul Givan MLA said:
“I welcomed the opportunity to visit Belfast’s Harland and Wolff shipyard and to discuss the development of the existing links between Harland and Wolff and Primary and Post Primary schools across Belfast.
“Through ongoing collaboration with schools, Harland and Wolff continue to introduce children to the rich history of this iconic company and open up young peoples’ minds to the potential of a future career in the shipbuilding and wider maritime industries.”
David Honeyman, Harland & Wolff’s Director of Talent, had the following to say about the launch of the business’ 2024 Summer Schemes:
“At Harland & Wolff we are always looking to utilise the talent pools available to us both in Belfast and at each of our sites across the UK.”
“We understand the importance of harnessing, nurturing and supporting the wealth of emerging STEM talent within our community, engaging with students at both further and higher education level and are therefore excited about the working with the bright young candidates that these schemes have been designed for.”
