From Ambition to Operational Advantage: SMI Welcomes the First AUKUS Pillar II Signature Project Announcement

SMI warmly welcomes the announcement of the first AUKUS Pillar II signature project, focused on delivering cutting-edge payloads and enabling systems for AUKUS partners’ Uncrewed Undersea Vehicles, with delivery beginning in 2027.
Commenting on the announcement Tom Chant MBE, Chief Executive, SMI said:
This is an important and positive step for the UK, Australia and the United States. It shows AUKUS moving from ambition into practical delivery, with industry playing a central role in turning advanced capability into operational advantage.
The focus on UUV payloads, enabling systems and interoperability is exactly where AUKUS Pillar II can add real value. These are the technologies that will allow the three nations to work more effectively together, strengthen deterrence, and accelerate the deployment of next-generation maritime capability.
Mark Albon, Director of SMI Maritime Defence and Security Group further added:
As we celebrate the announcement, it’s also right to recognise the wider ecosystem that has helped bring this moment closer. The continued success of the Maritime Big Play series over recent years has demonstrated the strength, relevance and maturity of emerging maritime technologies, particularly in the uncrewed and autonomous systems space.
Alongside this, the Advanced Capabilities Industry Forum (ACIF), which we have been pleased to be part of, has helped create a more structured route for industry to engage with government, share capability, and support the development of practical collaborative projects across the AUKUS partnership.
For industry, the message is clear: this is the moment to be part of the conversation.
Companies with relevant technologies, products, services or expertise should ensure they are connected into the AUKUS ecosystem, including by joining the Authorised User Community here.
AUKUS Pillar II will only succeed if government and industry move together. This announcement is a welcome step towards that shared endeavour and a strong signal of intent from all three AUKUS nations.
As a proud member of the Advanced Capabilities Industry Forum, SMI will continue to work in this capacity to strengthen the bridge between government and industry -championing the technologies, companies and partnerships that will define the next phase of AUKUS. We remain committed to advancing the successful engagement of the UK defence industry, ensuring its expertise and innovation are fully connected into this vital trilateral endeavour.
