SMI welcomes announcement regarding the acquisition programme for the Fleet Solid Support ships

The Society of Maritime Industries welcomes the announcement that the acquisition programme for the Fleet Solid Support ships (FSS) for the Royal Navy is moving ahead.

A strong UK bid from a consortium of leading UK shipbuilders and maritime engineering companies – Babcock International GroupBAE Systems, Cammell-Laird, Rolls-Royce – has been accepted by the MOD to enter into the international competition.

The Society recognises the importance of this project in the generation of the full carrier strike capability in the next decade which is a central element in the UK’s conventional deterrent force.

Whatever the commercial outcome, this is a key programme that will help sustain skills and expertise in the UK maritime industry supply chain and contribute to the prosperity of the UK maritime enterprise. And if the UK consortium is successful in this international competition, it will also allow the aims of the UK National Shipbuilding Strategy to be realised.
