Department of International Trade: Marine Exporting Newsletter October 2016

Department for International Trade (D.I.T)’s targeted programme of cross-government support and activity over the next 5-years will focus on - Brazil, China and South Korea.

BRAZIL (TRADE CAMPAIGN MARKET)

The opportunity: Despite the well-publicised difficulties in this market, structural and long term gaps in Brazil’s national supply chain mean that the shipyards and owner/operators will continue to import major systems such as power, propulsion, electronics and dynamic positioning – as well as vessel design itself.

Therefore, the pipeline at the Brazilian shipyards includes PSVs, OSVs and AHTS for the oil & gas sector; and barges, pushers and tugboats for the agribusiness sector.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:

  • w/c October 3 Nov 2016 – D.I.T's Brazil marine specialist hosted a roundtable event in October to talk about the developing Brazilian Marine opportunities, detail the government support available and answer your questions about doing business in Brazil. A further roundtable will be held in the North East w/c 9 January 2017, watch Horizon for the details.
  • 06-15 January 2017 London Boat Show 2017: D.I.T activity at this event will include supporting a delegation of Brazilian luxury/leisure marine buyers who will take part in the D.I.T Meet the Buyer sessions.
  • March 2017 – D.I.T will support a range of bespoke marine/offshore supply activity, including a planned trade mission, at the annual UK Energy Showcase event in Rio in March.

LATEST BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES:

CHINA (TRADE CAMPAIGN MARKET)

The Opportunity: D.I.T will promote the UK as a key partner to assist the Chinese to move up the value chain and realise their goal of building more complex higher spec vessels in sub-sectors such as cruise liners, OSVs, research vessels and search & rescue.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:

  • 29 November – 1 December 2016, Seawork Asia: D.I.T and British Marine will support a TAP group at the event and participate in the conference programme. Our initial focus will be the developing opportunities around The Chinese Rescue and Salvage Bureau’s impending plans to upgrade their fleet.
If you are interested in TAP support for Seawork Asia contact RSelby@britishmarine.co.uk and details of the mission group are attached.
  • 06-15 January 2017 London Boat Show 2017: D.I.T will host a Meet the Buyer and Meet the DIT Commercial Officer sessions and support a delegation of Chinese and Brazilian buyers interested in leisure marine - motor yachts and luxury sailing yachts - and cruise ship suppliers. D.I.T, CBBC and UK Export Finance will be based in the ‘Maritime is Great’ business lounge or the duration of the event.
  • March 2017 – The Queen Mary 2 will visit China next year and we intend to use this visit as the ideal platform to promote UK’s cruise liner Showcase and a mission programme focussed on cruise ship suppliers.
SOUTH KOREA (TRADE CAMPAIGN MARKET)

The Opportunity: Although this is a very challenging time for the South Korean economy - especially in the ship building sector - with a 3rd of the world order book and a focus on high-value vessels there remain significant opportunities for systems and components relevant to UK capability in the medium to longer term.

Budget has been approved for a marine specialist to work with D.I.T / FCO colleagues in South Korea for a few months to help develop some of the opportunities. Following their time in South Korea, the D.I.T STBA specialist will visit key UK regions to talk about the developing opportunities, procurement processes and the market engagement options.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:

  • w/c 28 November 2016 – D.I.T will work with key Korean trade body KOSHIPA to support an inward mission of representatives from Korean shipyards. As part of the mission programme, a UK-Korea Marine Partnership workshop will take place in London on Wednesday 30 November with the support of the South Korean trade ministry (MOTIE). The mission group will include Hyundai, Samsung, Daewoo and Doosan. A draft flyer is attached for the workshop and more information, including venue, can be found on Horizon next week.
 FDI
  • D.I.T technology specialist will engage with Australian FDI prospects this week in a series of roundtables FDI events in association with key Australian trade organisation AIMEX.
  • As a follow up to the above, our marine specialist will engage DIT / AIMEX FDI activity at METS in mid-November.
  • A consultant will be engaged to deliver a detailed UK marine engineering and manufacturing capability gap analysis which will support our FDI strategy.
