Encouraging tomorrow’s technologists in maritime autonomous systems (MAS) – calling all universities with an interest in MAS!

SMI is pleased to announce the launch of the first Maritime Autonomy Challenge 2019 (MAChallenge) - due to take place between the 2nd and 4th August at Calshot Activities Centre, Southampton.

Maritime Autonomous Systems (MAS) are of increasing importance to a wide range of sectors and a key part of this challenge is to encourage young technologists studying in this area at university to develop careers that contribute to the future of the UK’s MAS industry.

The theme for the MAChallenge is ‘identifying plastics in the ocean’ and the objectives are:

  • To stretch the knowledge of the students and promote creative thinking
  • Encourage team working through a variety of individual skills
  • Connect the brightest young talent coming through the UK’s universities with the UK’s MAS industry.

Through this challenge, SMI are keen to deliver exposure across the academic community, UK Government and the media to highlight the importance Maritime Autonomous Systems in the delivery of a wide range of applications across all aspects of the maritime sector.

John Murray, Chief Executive of SMI, said,

“This will be a great opportunity for university students to develop practical solutions for a global problem and engage with a dynamic growing industry at the same time.”
