A Marintec China Case Study - Hensoldt

Marintec China is Asia’s leading shipbuilding trade fair – a four-day expo that will allow more than 2,000 exhibitors to showcase their innovations, products and services to an expected 65,000 visitors. This year’s event will take place at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre between December 3 and 6.

In order to support British companies visiting and exhibiting at Marintec 2019, the UK government’s Department of International Trade has partnered with the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) to provide a special package of support. This includes a specially designed UK Pavilion under the Exporting is GREAT brand.

IMG 1947Sensor technology specialist HENSOLDT is one of the companies attending as part of the UK Pavilion. The firm will be using the event to showcase its newly launched integrated navigation system – Manta NEO.

According to Kevin Robertson, Director for Cruise & Special Projects at HENSOLDT, the system represents a whole new philosophy on how RADAR and ECDIS are managed within the situational analysis sphere for navigators on board vessels.

Unlike previous flatscreen RADAR systems, Manta NEO has been designed to make maximum use of available flatscreen space for situational analysis and collision avoidance, while minimising menus so they don’t clutter the screen and the RADAR picture. Manta NEO will be available for every ship that chooses to install an integrated bridge.

Mr Robertson said:

IMG 1946“Everything is focused on Europe at the moment in terms of cruise ship building, with the odd flurry in Japan, but cruise and ferry construction is moving to China. It is a market that you just can’t ignore – they build more ships per year than any other shipbuilding nation. The first steel has been cut in China for Carnival’s new cruise ships and the country will become a leading centre for cruise ship construction in the future. By exhibiting at Marintec 2019 we will be there among the builders, showing them exactly what HENSOLDT can offer".

He continued:

“It is a very competitive market and events like Marintec China provide us with an opportunity to showcase Britain as an innovator in the shipping industry. What we bring, as a maritime nation, is a lot of innovation and skills that help Chinese shipbuilders, and provide assurance to ship owners that those skills have been translated across from the UK into the Chinese marketplace.”
