Interesting and informative seminar on Current Trends in Shipping on 27 November

Held at the Society's London City office this interesting and informative seminar took a look at three important topics.

Richard Greiner, Partner, Moore Stephens reviewed the outcomes and examined the trends shown by Moore Stephens’ annual survey of Shipping Confidence. This analysis set the scene for a ‘tour de force’ by Trevor Crowe, Director, Clarkson Research Services who provided a comprehensive and fascinating overview of the shipping market.

Trevor began by looking at the key characteristics of the shipping markets following the crash in 2008 setting them in the context of the market cycle. He then considered the macro trends of the growth in seaborne trade, the regional share of seaborne imports, growth in the world’s fleet and its ownership and the sector trends relating to oil tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and gas tanker demand.

Finally Trevor turned to the outlook considering long term growth projections, shipping overcapacity, structural changes to the pattern of trade, societal factors and environmental regulation from which he synthesised ten key issues.

The seminar concluded with a presentation from Phil Parry and Teresa Peacock respectively Chairman and Business Development Director at  Spinnaker Consulting Group provocatively entitled ‘Unemployment is high yet skills are in short supply’.  This took an unusual and entertaining look at maritime sector training, skills shortages, training standards and remuneration in an international context.
