Introduction and Background

  1. Last year’s survey by the Ports and Terminals Group (PTG) revealed a desire for the Society to become engaged or lead the debate about matters and issues which concern or affect the ports and terminals sector.
  2. Any topic considered. Examples of interest areas for debate include: port and terminal regulation, environmental issues, changing trade patterns, the development or impact of new technology, the need for innovation.
  3. With the PTG Council Chairman tasked to introduce the speakers (and keep order), the envisaged format is for the topic to be raised by the ‘expert’, who for 10-15 minutes, will brief on the subject and provide an opinion identifying a concern or points which need addressing or which are in some way contentious.
  4. The event is for SMI Members only.  Chatham House rule applies.
  5. The debate will then be opened to the meeting for all to consider and discuss the issues, suggest remedies or solutions or propose new areas of research or ways of doing things.
  6.  In some instances the outcome may lead to the creation of a working group to support or represent the SMI on another body or to develop the debate elsewhere.
  7. The debate and outputs will be captured and made available on the SMI website so that the issue is not lost to sight and can be revisited.
