The Passing of SMI Honorary Member, Ken Gibbons

It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Honorary Member, Ken Gibbons at the age of 89.  Ken retired from SMI on 30 March 2012 when he was Director of SMI’s ports and offshore groups, PTG and ABOI.

However, Ken’s involvement with SMI goes back to our predecessor organisation, British Marine Equipment Council (BMEC), as an industry member and a period as Chairman of the ABOI Council in the 1990’s, subsequently becoming Director in September 1999.  He was also responsible for a key development in BMEC’s history as the founding Director for PTG when it was set up in 1996.

Ken Gibbons CropKen’s intellect was formidable, and a ready whit endeared him to many members.  His boundless energy left many much younger colleagues trailing in his wake especially when he led the many overseas ports missions to far flung corners of the world!

Always looking for ways to generate business opportunities for our members, Ken was one of the first to respond to the increased security concerns following 9/11 by the creation of a security group offshoot of the PTG Council in 2002.

In his early life Ken was an Oxford graduate in natural sciences with an industry background originally in an oil super major and subsequently in international contracting, serving on the boards of companies in the AMEC and Kvaerner Groups.

His ports related background included the development of world-scale hydrocarbon terminals in the UK and Venezuela, participation in the privatisation of Tees/Hartlepool and Medway ports and establishment of build-operate-transfer projects.
