The Nautical Institute and KVH Videotel launch free online development courses for NI members

The Nautical Institute is collaborating with KVH Videotel, a world leader in the provision of e-learning for the maritime industry, to give its members access to a set of online training courses free of charge.

The interactive courses, which take between 4-40 hours to complete are relevant to all professional levels from cadet to Master, and aim to further knowledge, enhance skills and, ultimately, advance the careers of those mariners seeking to progress. Nautical Institute members can access one standard level course of their choice free of charge every year.

Covering a variety of maritime topics, including risk assessment at sea, marine environmental awareness, ECDIS and crisis management, each course majors on the theme of safety, addressing key regulations and providing a comprehensive overview of the hazards, risks and control measures a mariner may encounter on duty.

John Lloyd, CEO of The Nautical Institute, said:

“Individual commitment to personal development is a key characteristic of the true professional. I am thrilled to announce a brand new initiative that will make this both easier and cheaper for Nautical Institute members.”

Mark Woodhead, KVH Senior Vice President, EMEA said:

"The courses are different to other types of training in that they are entirely learner-driven. Candidates enjoy rich, interactive content delivered at a pace to suit them and in a space that is comfortable and convenient. There are no costly hotels or flights needed to visit a training centre and the array of tests and exercises featured within the courses help the learner to consolidate and keep track of new-found knowledge.”

On completion of the course candidates are invited to take an online test encompassing questions from all modules. The test result is delivered onscreen and may be recorded by the learner in their CPD file or other record of achievement. Where an official certificate is required, the candidate is invited to have their work authenticated and submitted to KVH Videotel for which a small fee is payable.

For members seeking to enhance their professional capabilities and advance within the industry, the online course collaboration between The Nautical Institute and KVH Videotel presents an exciting opportunity for development.
