Babcock and Vine Trust Expedition Continues to Build New Future for Tanzania Locals

Babcock International, the highly-skilled engineering services company, joined forces with Edinburgh based international charity, Vine Trust, as 19 employees from its Marine sector travelled to Moshi, Tanzania to build three houses during November.

For the second year running, Babcock’s volunteers from Rosyth and Clyde in Scotland, as well as Bristol and Devonport put their teamwork to the test to build three new homes for families in need.

The 14-day experience involved all aspects of project management and planning and four Canadian employees also represented Babcock for the first time this year.

Ahead of the expedition, volunteers from across Babcock’s sites were challenged with raising at least £1,000 – with a group target of at least £19,000. To reach this, team members took part in a number of different activities from bake sales and sponsored bike rides to DIY in their local communities. One brave individual from Bristol even volunteered to have his legs waxed.

Richard Taylor, a Graduate HR Advisor was among the Rosyth employees who travelled to Babcock and Vine Trust Expedition Continues to Build New Future for Tanzania LocalsTanzania, raising more than £1,300 through bake sales, a raffle and the generosity of family and friends said:

“The experience was something that I will never forget. I found it a hugely moving trip, during which I met many incredible people along the way. No matter how hard things were for the local people, they were always smiling. That happiness is something I will take away from the experience.”

John Howie, Chief Executive of Marine at Babcock, said:

“Over the last 18 months, our programme has helped set us up for success with Vine Trust in Tanzania. This year we were proud to welcome a truly global team and I am delighted with their efforts. The skills that they learned and the experiences that they encountered during their expedition, will last a lifetime.”

Reverend Willie McPherson, Vine Trust Chief Executive, added:

“We are delighted to continue working with Babcock. The team has once again excelled with their innovative fundraising efforts and these new homes offer more than just a place to stay – they will create a critical lifeline for the community to rebuild their lives after tragedy.”
