The submarine business unit is a key component of BAE Systems naval activities


The Submarines business unit is a key component of BAE Systems Maritime naval activities. It comprises the shipyard at Barrow in Furness, designated as a submarine centre of excellence, the Successor, Astute and Vanguard Class update teams at Farnborough and Weymouth, and the Combat Systems integration facilities at Ash Vale.

BAE Systems Submarines is the Technical Authority for the Astute class of submarines. It is the industry lead for the Successor-deterrent programme and key member of the collaborative pre-concept team looking at the Maritime Underwater Future Capability requirements.

The Barrow shipyard has built, integrated and commissioned every submarine currently in service with the Royal Navy.
