Maritime Autonomy Challenge (MAChallenge)

Developing the UK’s future Maritime Autonomy technologists

Maritime Autonomous Systems are of increasing importance to a wide range of sectors, including marine scientific and survey, offshore resource exploitation, maritime transport and defence and maritime security operations. The UK is a technology leader in this area and the Maritime Autonomous Systems Group (MASG) Council aims to enhance this reputation and encourage development and take-up of MAS technologies in the UK.

A key part of this mission is to encourage young technologists working in this area and to help them develop careers that contribute to the future of the UK’s MAS industry. As part of this, the MASG Council are launching a competition for UK-based students, which will culminate in two-day residential event at the Calshot Outdoor Activity Centre in Hampshire in August 2019.

Competition Outline:

Teams of 5 are invited to compete over two phases:

  1. Each team will be required to submit a two minute long video pitch to outline why they should be selected to compete in the residential event.
  2. Five teams will be selected from the submitted videos and given a common set of materials, including catamaran hulls, propulsion… Teams will then have four months to prepare their vehicles for the main event, which will be held over a weekend. This will comprise time to assemble their vehicles, followed by a number of challenges. The winner will be announced on the Sunday afternoon with the prize being £2,000.

Key Dates:

  1. 13 November 2018 – Competition launch during the Marine Autonomy & Technology Showcase at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).
  2. 11 March 2019 – Closing date for Phase I video submissions.
  3. 9-11 April 2019 – Finalists for Phase II announced during Ocean Business.
  4. 2-4 August 2019 – Final competition at Calshot Activity Centre.
