Hardly a week goes by without a trial autonomous sailing being announced somewhere around the world.  It would appear that the technical capability exists now and it is only the regulatory framework which is lagging behind, according to some pundits.  However, whilst the technology is chased down it is easy to forget the human element and in particular the challenges faced by a port’s pilots as they come ‘face-to-face’ with a ship supporting the minimum of crew.

Our first speaker will be Don Cockrill, Secretary General of the UK Maritime Pilots’ Association, and an experienced pilot with the Port of London Authority for more than 28 years.

He will be joined by Claire Womersley from leading shipping law firm, Holman Fenwick Willan, who will provide an overview of the issues to be addressed as increasing levels of autonomy are adopted in the port/shipping environment.

The Chairman of the SMI PTG Council, Han Ozturk, will then open up the proceedings to a discussion on the issues raised under Chatham House rule.  The session will end with a networking sandwich lunch and refreshments.

These discussion meetings are an ideal opportunity to keep up to date with one’s industry peers. More speakers to be announced!
