Why does this matter to me and my organisation?
Marine Geospatial Data is any information in the ocean space that can be attributed with a location and it is widely accepted that nearly every activity undertaken in the ocean fundamentally relies on one or more of its numerous forms. These activities stretch from enabling shipping and the innovation of maritime autonomy; to offshore energy, fisheries and environmental research; to legal delimitation, finance and infrastructure planning. With the constant development of new technologies and the increasing reliance on our ocean to meet the needs of today’s fast-changing world, a coordinated approach from right across the UK’s diverse Marine Geospatial Community will be essential.
The development of the National Geospatial Strategy is also timely; with initiatives such as the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the Government’s Foresight Future of the Sea Report, Maritime 2050 Strategy and forthcoming International Ocean Strategy; all create new opportunities for Marine Geospatial Data to inform sustainable ocean innovation, prosperity and environmental protection.
