Maritime Safety Week

MARITIME-SAFETY-WEEK

Monday 6 July - Friday 10 July 2020

The Department for Transport are delighted to announce that Maritime Safety Week 2020 will be taking place from 6 – 10 July!

It is through your active engagement and promotion of the Week that its purpose to highlight the importance of safety to the sector can be realised. By sharing best practice and driving continuous improvement we can all make a genuine difference.

The objectives for the Week are to:

  • recognise the excellent safety work that already goes on across the sector
  • provide an opportunity to focus on some specific challenges, such as fishing safety, and what is being done to tackle them
  • facilitate the sharing of knowledge, experience and best practice
  • capitalise on the momentum provided during last year’s Week by delivering key safetymessages to the target audiences who would benefit from hearing them the most.

The week will have a very different feel this year given the continued impact of the coronavirus pandemic and thanks to the entire sector for its incredible response to these additional challenges which have ensured there has been no break in delivery of the critical goods and services we all need to live and thrive.

Kelly Tolhurst, Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Security, said:

"I have spoken to many of you over the past few months and have greatly appreciated your pragmatic and resourceful response to the considerable issues which have faced us. It has been the best possible illustration of the great strengths of partnership working between business and government – one of the areas which the Week was designed to showcase. It has also become clear to me that, regardless of the problem, safety is always a common theme and remains top priority for the sector so there can be no better time to celebrate its importance in underpinning these successes. Having worked in the maritime sector myself I know it is vital, especially during these uncertain times, that we reaffirm our commitment to safety. Please use the Week to highlight the brilliant work that you all do, whatever your role, to keep those using our seas and waterways safe."

The Week will play an important part in moving the conversation forward to understand how we can deliver continuous improvement and secure a safer future for everyone. The UK continues to set the international standard in ensuring the wide variety of people who use and enjoy our waters for business or pleasure can do so safely. However, the UK must never become complacent and always remember the marine environment continues to pose significant risks and that there is always more that can be done to explain the dangers and keep people out of harm’s way. This will be even more relevant over the summer with more people than ever staying in Britain for their holidays.

Kelly Tolhurst has an exciting programme planned for the Week, which this year is being run concurrently with Seafarers Awareness Week to recognise the importance of their roles and ensure they also receive appreciation, and am looking forward to seeing even more fine examples of safety work.
