Ship Preparation Contract (SPC) to Support the Preparation of Ships for Disposal or Sale

On the 4th August 2004 the MoD Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO) awarded an enabling contract to help with the task of preparing Royal Navy ships for disposal or sale.  Under this contract, BAE Systems are required to engage with UK industry to procure value for money solutions for Capital Ship Disposal activities, using competition as the norm.  The contract therefore provides significant business opportunities for UK industry.

The work can cover simple tasks, such as carrying out ship surveys or towing and providing custody of vessels, to the more complex task of regeneration for vessels where ships have been de-commissioned for a considerable length of time.  The enabling contract also allows UK industry to offer the new owners cost effective support services, post sale.

Ship Disposals - The Support Marketing Forum
For over 6 years now, BAE Systems has been UK industry’s nominated Lead Contractor (UKLC) for ship disposals.  A formal Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the MoD’s Disposal Services Agency (DSA) governs this role. Under this arrangement, and with the endorsement of around 100 UK companies, CS&S Naval helps DSA to market the ships, offering an industry perspective; and, where appropriate, holding competitions for any work required by the new owners. Regular meetings are held for Support Marketing Forum members.  The DLO enabling contract, referred to above, builds on the work done by the Support Marketing Forum and formalises the arrangement to the benefit of both MoD and industry.
