UK marine industries have been responsible for some of the most important developments in the global industry, and contribute £10s of billions to the UK economy each year. The UK has often been cited as the world’s leading maritime nation. However, many other countries are now forging ahead, taking a long term view, and we must take action in the UK to stay ahead.
The Leadership Council is actively engaging the marine industries to develop a strategic approach to the future.
As global competition intensifies and other nations improve their capabilities, the UK marine industries cannot afford to be complacent. We believe that government, businesses and other stakeholders must work together and unite behind a bold vision and strategy. Through consultation with all stakeholders, we have developed a Strategic Framework which represents the start of that process.
We posed the big questions. How can we collaborate better to grow the UK’s market share? What are we good at? How important is this industry to the UK? What are the global trends and where are the opportunities for the UK? What are the drivers for change? Where do we want to be by 2020? How do we achieve the Vision? We have begun to answer these questions and have used our findings to formulate a shared vision, six objectives and an initial action plan. We are actively implementing some early actions where we have consensus about what needs to be done now.
We now call on all the industries’ stakeholders to engage with this initiative. Identify where you can help implement the early actions: Get involved in the strategy development. Work with us to increase global market share. The UK has world-class marine industries. Let’s build on that.
