Winner of the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) Donald Maxwell Award 2017 Announced!

Joseph Martin, a student at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, was awarded this year’s Donald Maxwell Award at the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) AGM Luncheon.

Joseph Martin (left) being awarded the SMI Donald Maxwell Award by Chairman Russell GouldThe award is given for the best third year degree project from a UK resident student undertaking their study on a degree accredited by The Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST).

Joseph received a cheque for £500 and his certificate from the new Chairman of the SMI Board Mr Russell Gould. 

Mr Gould said:

“SMI is delighted to be supporting young engineers as they progress with their studies.  What impressed our judges most about Joseph’s dissertation was that it offered genuine commercial application to improving the safety of air-sea operations”

Judging was undertaken by SMI Board member Mr Duncan Cunningham FIMarEST and Mr Phil Green CEng FRINA. Joseph’s paper most impressed the judges and was on the topic of “Air Flow Over Commercial Vessel Super-Structures with Respect To [Emergency] Air-Sea Operations.”


About the Donald Maxwell Award
Donald Maxwell was the first Secretary and Director of the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) predecessor organisation the British Marine Equipment Council.  Following his death in 1978, the Donald Maxwell award fund was created and in 1989 the funds were transferred to the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) for administration.
