We take a major lead in the UK Marine Industries Alliance (MIA) a joint government/industry body within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. The UK MIA works on a number of fronts and engages across government to improve the growth prospects for our sector.
To ensure the issues affecting our members are brought before government we hold regular meetings with officials from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), Department for Transport, Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Cabinet Office. Our Honorary Vice Presidents are Mrs Flick Drummond MP (Conservative), Mr Jim Fitzpatrick MP (Labour) and Ms C Monaghan MP (Scottish National Party) and are a valuable source of advice from the House of Commons. These links enable us to ensure we have access to all levels of government.
We are on the list of nominating organisations for the Lloyd’s Register Technical Committee. The Committee is responsible for any technical issues connected with LR’s marine business, any proposed alterations in the existing Rules and any new Rules for classification.
In pursuit of members’ interests, we maintain influence on an extensive number of bodies that have bearing on the maritime sector. The list includes, but is not restricted to, the BIS Marine Industries Leadership Council, Defence Industries Council, the Marine Industries Liaison Group of the Marine Science Co-ordination Committee in Defra, Sea Vision, the All-Party Parliamentary Maritime and Ports Group, the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee, Scottish Enterprise Aerospace Defence and Marine Industry Leadership Group, the Export Group for Aerospace and Defence (EGAD) and the SME Forum of the Defence Suppliers’ Forum.
